Soul Talk

Have you ever had a soul talk with yourself?

My husband mumbles and talks to himself sometimes. I usually cannot hear what he’s saying and when I ask, he says “...never mind, I was talking to myself.”

We all do it.  Maybe it’s reminders to do something or replaying conversations where you wish you’d said this or that. But the most important conversation is when your inner voice or critic tells you things about yourself. Things like:

“I always say the wrong thing.”

“I’m so dumb.”

“I can’t do anything right.

“I hate my body.”

How you talk to yourself matters. If this is the kind of communication you are having with yourself it’s time to change the conversation and teach yourself how to have a soul talk. In Psalm 103 we see David’s soul talk.

It begins like this:

“Bless the Lord, oh my soul,

Forget not all His benefits.”

He tells his soul it’s time to bless the Lord and remember what God says about him, his situation and his life.  In verse 3-5 David lists the benefits.

I am forgiven.

I am healed.

I am redeemed from destruction.

I am crowned with lovingkindness and tender mercies.

I am satisfied with good things.

“Bless the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭103:1-5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

When you have a soul talk with yourself, start teaching that inner voice how to speak to you. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you.

Last year, I created a confessions list as a guide for my personal soul talk. It included things that were important to me as confessions and declarations.

I looked at the confession list every day and said it out loud. I even recorded it so I could listen to it. On the list were goals that I felt God had given me and gifts that I believe God wants me to be empowered with and operate in. Here are some of my daily confessions that make up my soul talk with myself.

The words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart will be acceptable to the Lord.

The favor of the Lord surrounds me like a shield.

I am meditating in the Word of God day and night and dealing wisely with all of my affairs.

The Lord satisfies my desires with good things, and my youth is being renewed.

I am anointed by the Holy Spirit for ministry and the gifts of miracles, faith, discernment, prophecy, words of wisdom and knowledge are operating in me.

My faith overcomes anything and everything that tries to overcome me.

I am called to write and be an inspiring woman.

I have ears to hear the voice of the Lord.

I am created by God to prosper and live an abundant life and make a difference in this world.

It’s a long list and these are just a few but you get the gist.

I don’t have to encourage you to talk to yourself because everyone does, and often what you say is said in your subconscious.  When your inner voice speaks to you, you believe what that voice says more than any other person. What I hope to do is encourage you to change how you talk to yourself. Make a list of the things you need to say to yourself based on God’s Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit. Start teaching your inner voice what to say that lines up with God’s calling and words.

What has he called you to do? What weakness do you need to speak to? Frame it as a confession or declaration you make about yourself.  I believe if you do this for 40 days it will be transformative for you. It will become the narrative recorded in your subconscious and effect you in powerful ways.

Take some time to have this kind of soul talk with yourself. Words are powerful, so transform what you say to yourself. Make your confessions list and use it everyday for 40 days. Get ready to see some amazing things happen.
